Paranormal Plant: a haunted venue in Oak Harbor, Ohio

Paranormal Plant opened on October 1. By day, 411 South Railroad Street in Oak Harbor is a working factory. After dark the offices become something else: one group, the whole night, a ghost hunt and a haunted escape room, with a bed waiting when either one gets to be too much. The site had to be public in about a week, so that night could be seen, priced, and asked for. Taking a card is the work scheduled for later this month.

The night

From 8 PM until 5 AM the Victorian offices and the farm grounds belong to a single group of up to 12. Nobody else is in the building. Sunday nights the house rests.

Paranormal investigators have the run of the place, complete with ghost-hunting equipment but you are welcome to bring your own. The escape rooms are built into those same offices. The first is psychological: complete the tasks to win, and each task is worse than the last. A candlelit séance room is set aside for the table, and for calling out to whoever is listening. When the group wants out of the dark, the lounge has board games, consoles, and a big screen — put something scary on and let someone else do the screaming. There is a theatre, food and drink with no extra tab, a bed for every guest, and a gym if the night goes quiet. Outside, the emus stand guard over the chickens and keep the coyotes away. While they look imposing, they are actually friendly, and a little reserved.

One price covers all of it. Weeknights are $100 a guest with no minimum. Friday and Saturday start at a $500 minimum, which covers up to five guests, then $100 for each guest after that.

Paranormal Plant is a project of Humble Gardens, a 501(c)(3). The night funds the trees: proceeds plant fruit trees for the community farm.

The site

The pages follow that night: home, the experience, a gallery, pricing, house rules, contact, and booking a night. It’s a static Astro site dressed for the rooms. Near-black background, with brass for the actions. The photographs express the rooms themselves and set the mood.

Headlines are Grenze Gotisch; the body is Grenze. Renata Polastri and the Omnibus-Type team designed Grenze in 2018 as a frontier between a classical roman and blackletter — the name is the German word for that border — with sharp serifs, a condensed build, and enough clarity to set a magazine. Gotisch, from 2020, crosses the line: blackletter capitals, and small dramatic breaks in the lowercase, so the feeling sits in the display type. Blackletter itself started as a book hand. In northern European manuscripts the pen lifts and the stroke fractures; Gutenberg cut type in that same broken letter; German books and newspapers kept it for ordinary reading deep into the twentieth century. Alongside that life it was the letter on certificates, beer labels, and metal, any place a word needed to feel older than the thing it named. That range is why the pair fits the plant. Gotisch carries the night in the headlines. Grenze carries the hours, the price, and the waiver.

Booking, held on purpose

The reservation flow shipped with the debut, so a group can already choose their night before they can pay for it. A weeknight or a weekend, a headcount up to 12, and a calendar you move through with the arrow keys and Enter. Open, booked, and closed nights are labeled. Name, email, phone, and the house rules and waiver sit on the next step, with payment after that.

The control on that calendar still reads Online booking opens soon. Availability and card payment are the slice due later this month. The shell went out with the launch so people could see the night, the price, and the rules while checkout was still being built.

We ensure accessibility by making the booking form easy to navigate: a skip link, a label on every field, and the calendar’s own instructions on the page — use the arrow keys to move between days, and Enter to choose.

Book a Night on Paranormal Plant: an October calendar, a guest stepper set to 2, a $200 total, and the control that reads Online booking opens soon.

Coming soon

Later this month, the booking form will go live. I also plan to add more visual identity and interest to the site. In the future we have plans to add a blog and member newsletter to keep people updated on new investigations, promotions, and events.
